- No Built-In Diode: Designed without an internal diode, this transformer supports versatile AC circuit applications. By omitting the diode, the transformer can manage alternating current effectively, allowing for pure AC output, making it perfect for high-voltage and high-power experiments.
- Adjustable Core: The detachable core allows you to modify the gap on both primary and secondary sides, enabling precise tuning of the resonance point for optimal performance and current limitation during short circuits.
- Customizable Winding: The secondary consists of 2400 turns encased in epoxy for durability, while the primary is unwound, allowing you the freedom to customize your winding. For those who prefer convenience, we offer a pre-wound primary option for a small additional cost. This pre-wound primary includes 40 turns for main power delivery and an additional 4 turns for core feedback measurements, ensuring seamless integration with our Half-Bridge Amplifiers.
- Extended Frequency Range: Achieve resonance from 1kHz up to 50kHz, depending on gap adjustments. This transformer can reach voltage outputs up to 25kV AC (50kV peak-to-peak).
- High Power and Voltage Capability: When paired with our Half-Bridge Amplifier, this transformer produces nearly perfect sine wave outputs and can handle power levels up to 300W. With its superior design, it excels at starting plasma even in standard atmospheric conditions and can initiate arcs between spark gaps up to 60mm.
- Convenient Mounting Option: Includes a sturdy bracket for easy chassis mounting, making integration into larger projects seamless.
Rated for 300W, it’s essential to monitor the temperature during extended operation to prevent overheating. We highly recommend purchasing the pre-wound primary when using it with our Half-Bridge Amplifier for a seamless setup experience. When operating at higher voltage levels near the transformer's upper rating, corona discharge between the ferrite core and secondary may produce ozone. Ensure you are in a well-ventilated area, as inhaling ozone can be harmful. It is also recommended to have a safety gap between electrodes to protect the core from potential burnout during high-voltage experimentation.
Important Recommendation: When using this transformer at voltage levels above 15kV, we strongly recommend purchasing the ferrite sleeve (available as an extra). There is a slight gap between the ferrite core and the secondary to facilitate disassembly for tuning purposes. Once the desired winding ratio and the appropriate gap between the ferrite halves are determined, filling this space with the sleeve significantly enhances the transformer's reliability. Using the sleeve reduces heating, minimizes corona and ozone production, and ensures long-term durability. Alternatively, the transformer can be submerged in oil, but the sleeve is a faster and more convenient solution.
This transformer has demonstrated the ability to exceed 25kV output; however, we do not currently have measuring probes to confirm this precisely. The best measurement method we have is observing plasma initiation over a 6cm spark gap directly, achieved when the transformer is tuned to its resonance frequency of approximately 46kHz (when only a spark gap is connected to the leads).
